Customer Review of State of Denial: Bush at War, Part III
Dysfunction in D.C.
Bob Woodward's compelling "State of Denial" continues an exposure of the Bush administration set forth by a number of recent books. Woodward, a master of narrative, begins with a short prelude to the Bush 2001 inauguration then launches full blast into the downward spiral known as Iraq. Through it all he tells of an incredibly inept White House more interested in spin than facts, with large-looming, clashing egos, clueless about the war and uncaring about policy and implementation of Iraqi reconstruction. In commenting about the whole chaotic scene, Woodward might have titled his book, "State of Limbo". <

>Every story has its heroes and villains and "State of Denial" has a number of each. However much any one person appears, this is really a book about one man...Donald Rumsfeld, or "SecDef", perhaps the most dysfunctional of them all. Eager for domination over his military officers, Rumsfeld, aided by President Bush's intellectual incuriosity, gathers steam as he propels his view of power far and wide, all the while spinning bad news into good. It's a command performance by Rumsfeld, wonderfully captured by Woodward throughout, but especially in the last chapter of the book. <

>Internecine feuding is nothing new to Washington but the people around Bush take it to new heights. Few trust any, the CIA and the White House are mutually at odds and the "blame game", so long eschewed publicly by the Bushies, is an almost daily occurrence. The only problem they seem to have forgotten is that there is a war going on. One is left to wonder if there are any adults in this administration. <

>While the book is largely about Iraq, there is one particularly good chapter not directly related to it. It is a chapter regarding Election Day, 2004. It's news to me that for most of the day and well into the evening that the Bush team thought they had lost. The author is at his very best in describing this 24-hour period. <

>The odd impression one might get from reading "State of Denial" is that though this is an account of recent American history, the players are mostly still there, and still sugar-coating the truth about the war and themselves. The self-importance and self-preservation of the men and women in and around the White House is as glaring as the midday sun and Bob Woodward tells it straightforwardly...always managing (as a good author should) not to inject himself too much into the story but to be constantly on the sidelines. I highly recommend "State of Denial" for its comprehensive look at a presidency failing at almost every turn and in utter disarray.

The TRUTH comes out!
This book tells us the TRUTH about Bush's war. Too bad the news doesn't give us this info. If you are a Bush lover, you won't like this book. However, if you are a rational person, you will LOVE it.

Salvaging one's reputation
The books is excellent in the writing, scope and non-flinching disclosure of facts not covered by the so-called press. But, I have the feeling that Bob is trying too hard to recover from his prior sycophantic works of the Bush administration. In the first two books, the Bush team could do no wrong and all of a sudden, it falls completely apart on many levels. You could not have written the first two with the knowledge shown in this book but apparently Bob did not believe or want to believe what he had uncovered. Now, with the truth coming out in many places, Bob has decided to change horses and try again. Bob savages a few people specifically our SectDefenfense and the VP. He protrays Condi as someone who drank the Koolade and then tried to pull out at the last second without much success. He shows the President in less then honorable terms with desciptions that show a very disengaged and ill mannered and poorly equiped man as President. Much of this book is known by those of who dig at stories but it is very nice to have it all put together in a well written narrative and to a point, documented. <

>I highly recommend the book for anyone interested in knowning the truth whatever they think. But Bob still lost my respect with his toadism to the Bush Whitehouse in the last two books.
