Customer Reviews of Pride and Prejudice
Charming & Comical Movie -- Please Add it to your Library WE LOVE THIS MOVIE! We highly recommend this version of "Pride & Prejudice"! It is beautifully written and the produced. And it is so comical!!
Charming Greer Garson has captured Elizabeth Bennett's strength and admirable unwavering loyalty to her family in a comical sweet way. And Lawrence Olivier has captured Mr.Darcy's misplaced arrogance and pride with a hidden sensitivity mixed in -- he does it perfectly!
It is a true love story! You can soon feel the TENSION and CHEMISTRY between the 2 of them. It is amazing!!!
And the Bennet family is perfectly portrayed in a hilarious way! You will laugh!
Please don't get to analytical as to whether is perfectly reflects Jane Austen's novel -- it is close enough - and this movie itself is a CLASSIC.
A favorite of ours! No doubt you will enjoy it too.
One of the Masterpieces of Classic Hollywood
This movie is sheer bliss!! The cast is just flawless, the screenplay delightful, the direction amazingly smooth. I consider this movie the best film Hollywood made in the 1940's. It certainly is one of the most engrossing films ever made - as many have mentioned in their reviews, you can watch this film dozens of times and always get caught up in it. Greer Garson is the perfect Jane Austen heroine, classically beautiful and sharply intelligent, while Laurence Oliver is a flawless Darcy. The supporting cast is uncommonly good - that magificent character comedienne Mary Boland (very much a star herself at the time in Hollywood movies) comes close to completely stealing the film in a delicious performance as a dominating mother. It is a crime she did not win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar or even get nominated. The Bennet sisters are all wonderful and distinctly different (Garson, Maureen O'Sullivan, Heather Angel, Ann Rutherford, Marsha Hunt) - all five actresses were around when this magic movie turned 50 in 1990 and Rutherford and Hunt are still living today. One strange note is the lovely actress Karen Morley playing Elizabeth's best friend, the script repeatedly comments on the character's plainness whereas Ms. Morley is quite beautiful. She is a wonderful actress though and her performance captures all the modesty and timidity of a less than beautiful girl. A final word to these Jane Austen "purists" who are trashing this classic adaption (most of whom I suspect are in truth just fans of stars of later adaptions), the movie may take certain liberties with Austen's work (as does EVERY movie worth it's salt when translating a novel to screen) but this movie is far more true to the "spirit" of the novel which is a comic romance not a Harlequin romance as some of the later TV adaptions came perilously close to being. Jane Austen most definately would have claimed this version!
Wonderful movie of a timeless novel
This version of Pride and Prejudice first got me interested in Jane Austen. Though it may not be the most acurate version of the famous novel, it is very funny and all of the characters are played well. Lawrence Olivier IS Mr. Darcy, and Greer Garson shines as Lizzy, despite her age difference to the character.
