Customer Reviews of Luster
A Little Uneven, But Sorta Charming The first time I saw this film I was disappointed with the loopy story and irritating "poetry" interspersed in the dialog. But long after I sent the movie back, I was thinking about it and so I rented it again. <
> <
>If you can overlook a few flaws in the form of narrated "poetry," unnecessary and unsubstantiated plot twists, and a grisly, amateurish sound track, there is some substance here to appreciate. <

>The actors are decent, the story is decent, and the main character physically and mentally wrestles with his feelings of affection and love for others. He states that he feels like he is in love with about 20 people a day, and that is the majority of the basis for this film and its examination of love in its various forms. <
> <
>Most notably, this film takes place in a world that is mostly, if not totally gay, and the sexuality of the characters is never an issue. This leaves lots of room for the twenty-something angst of confusing feelings and the search for the "true" or real love (apart from simply lust.) <
> <
>This is certainly an independent film with some rough edges, but it's edgy to a fault and daring and generally successful as it follows one man's path as he searches for love (mostly while it's all around him.)
More like Lackluster
It's a sad state of affairs when a low budget flick has more money than talent. There isn't much money thrown at Luster yet at times there seems to be even less in the way of talent.

>To be fair there are some rattling moments - mostly in the sped up, tagged on tragic ending. Truth be told there is a decent story here, just poorly told and, for the most part, horribly acted.

>There's a great indie film of post-metro-sexual revolution story of friendship, love and lust gone wrong buried somewhere in all of this. It's still waiting to be made.
Bitterly Disappointed
Having ordered this movie and being very excited about watching (having read the synopsis and seeing the picture on the front cover!!) I was VERY disappointed not only with the plot (or lack of one) but of the scratchy dialogue, poor acting and the obviously very low budget given to the making of the film.

>Just goes to show - never judge a DVD by the sleve jacket picture!

>I'm not saying it was the worst film I've ever forced myself to watch all the way through, but for a gay R18 movie I was extremely disappointed. Why it is rated R18 is totally beyond me as the only adult themes that 'pop up' once or twice is a supposed rape scene - which is not shown and is supposed to have been carried out by a real wimp of a character on a hunky straight (?) and fit cousin Jed (highly unlikely) and a 'couple' of full frontal newdy shots of Jed (nothing to write home to Dorothy about!). Apart from that there is a couple of gay kisses (shock horror!) and the suggestion of masochism (although again - hardly explicit).
