You'll love this combo kit Bosch 1617EVSPK 2HP
If you were looking at getting a combo kit now is your chance to get a 2 HP unit instead of the 1.5 HP units. The softstart and self center bits work great both as a plunge router as well as a fixed base and the 2 HP soft start and mag body makes it easy to control as well as light weight.

The 2 HP unit has plenty of power to be used in a router table a nd if you can only afford one router don't skimp for a few dollars more you get more power, variable speed and the bosch 2 HP variable speed router with the micro fine adjustments.

I have had the 1617EVS fixed based for over 6 months and the extra cost to buy the plunge router attachment added up to more than this whole kit with the storage case costs.

Excellant Router, Even Better as a Combo Kit
Bosch's new "combo kit" router offers the home craftsman or professional a "middle sized" tool with maximum versatility and flexibility. It can serve as an amateur's first (and maybe only) router, and it can soldier on for years doing 85-90% of all routing jobs encountered in general woodworking.

Bosch's fixed and plunge base offering is, in some respects, a "copy" of the well-known and excellant Porter-Cable combo kit. However, the Bosch router has ½ hp more power, high tech electronic speed control, lightweight magnesium bases and a host of other refinements which, depending on the work you do and what you think important, may or may not be significant.

What's wrong with it? Nothing I've noticed yet. It's smooth, it's powerful, it has "slow start" and a comfortable feel to use. It comes in a nice plastic case to store and carry it in...

Ok, the Bosch router kit does cost more new than the single-speed Porter-Cable router kit, and IF you can find the P-C kit used at half the Bosch's new price, like you can as this is written... well, that'd be a bargain. But I feel I was fortunate in delaying my own basic router purchase until Bosch's new "combo kit" came on the market.

Nice router combo
This router set replaced a Sears craftsman (gift) router which died after only a few hours of use. Now that I've put a few miles on the router I can say that I'm still very pleased, but the "ooo-ahh" has worn off a little.
The magnesium motor casing on some of this model had a problem with corrosion - mine is now starting show this. This issue was supposedly confined to a limited number of units and Bosch apparently replaced all the motor units of those who complained.
I haven't attempted to use the dust collection accessories because they seem a little finicky to install/ uninstall. I got a free edge guide with the combo kit which I've not used yet either (I have a table-mounted extra fixed base, so don't have much need for the edge guide).
The plastic sub-base can also be a little finicky to remove (for installation in a table).
The bushing guides are unique to Bosch-Porter Cable guides can not be used with this router without the addition of an adaptor or after-market sub-base (neither of these being very expensive).

All in all, I like this tool - it seems to be a solid, dependable router at a reasonable price. It's a great choice for someone who wants to take the plunge (sorry for pun) into a decent router which will far outlast/outperform a cheapy, but not be pressed into 40-hr/ week production use.
